Stepping into a Gulmarg Gondola cabin as it sweeps you silently above the treeline — the meadows falling away, the Himalayas expanding ahead, peaks deep into Pakistan becoming visible — is one of the most extraordinary 12 minutes in Indian travel. This guide tells you everything to make the most of it.

What Is the Gulmarg Gondola?

The Gulmarg Gondola (officially operated by the J&K Cable Car Corporation) is one of the world's highest operating cable car systems, running in two phases from Gulmarg town at 8,690 feet all the way to Afarwat Peak at 13,400 feet — a vertical ascent of over 4,700 feet in two stages.

The gondola was built to serve both tourism and Gulmarg's ski resort, and it does both — in summer it carries sightseers to breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, in winter it lifts skiers and snowboarders to some of Asia's finest powder slopes. It is the single most popular paid attraction in Kashmir, and rightly so.

Phase 01
Gulmarg → Kongdoori
  • Start: Gulmarg Town (8,690 ft)
  • End: Kongdoori Station (10,050 ft)
  • Rise: ~1,360 feet
  • Duration: ~10 minutes
  • Views: Gulmarg meadow, pine forest, first peaks
  • Best for: Families, first-timers, those with altitude concerns
Phase 02
Kongdoori → Afarwat Peak
  • Start: Kongdoori (10,050 ft)
  • End: Afarwat Peak (13,400 ft)
  • Rise: ~3,350 feet
  • Duration: ~12 minutes
  • Views: Full Himalayan panorama, LoC, Pakistan peaks
  • Best for: Adventurers, photographers, skiers
🎯

Our recommendation: Always do both phases if weather permits. Phase 1 alone is impressive but Phase 2 is transformative — the views from Afarwat Peak are among the finest anywhere in Kashmir. The extra ₹900 is absolutely worth it.

What to Expect at Each Phase

Phase 1 — Gulmarg to Kongdoori (10,050 ft)

The Phase 1 cabin rises quickly above the Gulmarg meadow, crossing into pine and fir forest before emerging above the treeline. The views open progressively — first the circular Gulmarg bowl below, then the Pir Panjal range appears, and finally the distant peaks of the Kashmir Valley horizon. Kongdoori Station is a broad mountain saddle with a small café, ski equipment rental shops, and spectacular views in all directions.

For those with mild altitude concerns, Kongdoori at 10,050 feet is well within most people's comfort zone. Spend 20–30 minutes here to acclimatize before deciding on Phase 2.

Phase 2 — Kongdoori to Afarwat Peak (13,400 ft)

Phase 2 is where the gondola earns its reputation. The cabin rises steeply above the snowline — even in summer, permanent snowfields cover the upper slopes. At Afarwat Peak (13,400 ft), the panorama is genuinely staggering: an unbroken sweep of the Himalayan ridgeline, the peaks of Pakistan-administered Kashmir visible to the north, and on the clearest days, distant Karakoram ranges beyond. Looking south, the entire Kashmir Valley spread below like a green map.

The summit station has basic refreshments. Temperatures at this altitude can be 10–15°C colder than Gulmarg town even in summer — carry a warm layer.

🌡️
Dress for Cold
Afarwat can be 8–12°C even in July. Always carry a jacket regardless of valley temperature.
Go Early
Phase 2 sells out in peak season. Arrive at 9 AM, queue, and secure tickets before the crowds.
📸
Camera Ready
The gondola cabin gives you 12 unobstructed minutes of Himalayan aerial photography — prepare your phone/camera before boarding.
🤧
Altitude Sense
13,400ft can cause mild headache or dizziness in some. Drink water before ascending. Don't rush — spend time at Kongdoori first.
☁️
Check Weather
Phase 2 closes when clouds move in or wind picks up. Clear morning skies are your best window — afternoons cloud over more often.
🎫
Book Online
In July and August, book gondola tickets online via the JKCC website the day before to avoid the morning queue.

Gulmarg Skiing — Winter Gondola

⛷️ India's Finest Ski Resort

Gulmarg is India's only world-class ski resort — and the gondola is its lifeline. From December through March, Phase 2 carries skiers to the Afarwat slopes where consistent snowfall and a long vertical drop create conditions that rival European ski destinations at a fraction of the cost.

Snow Type
Dry Himalayan powder — among Asia's finest off-piste snow.
Ski Rental
Full ski gear available at Kongdoori station — skis, poles, boots, suits.
Lessons
Certified ski instructors available at Kongdoori for beginners.
Best Month
January and February for deepest powder and best conditions.

Gulmarg in Summer — Beyond the Gondola

The gondola is the headline attraction but Gulmarg in summer offers much more. The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve circular meadow is 5 km around — one of the world's highest golf courses sits here (9 holes), ponies are available for rides around the meadow, and wildflower walks through the surrounding forests are spectacular in July and August.

The Strawberry Valley and Khilanmarg meadow (a 3 km uphill walk from the town) are beautiful summer destinations accessible on foot — Khilanmarg in particular gives outstanding views of the Nanga Parbat massif visible in the distance on clear days.

📍

Getting there: Gulmarg is 51 km from Srinagar — approximately 1.5 hours by road through Tangmarg. Taxis and Sumos run regularly from Srinagar's Tourist Taxi Stand. Our packages include private SUV from Srinagar to Gulmarg and back.
