The road condition varies significantly along the route. Srinagar to Daksum (83 km) is mostly good tarmac. The Daksum–Summit section (22 km) is a mountain road with steep gradients, sharp hairpins, and some rough or broken surface patches — particularly in early season (June) before the BRO has completed its post-winter repair work.

Timing Your Srinagar–Sinthan Top Drive
The timing of your departure from Srinagar significantly affects the quality of your Sinthan Top experience:
🕕Ideal departure: 6:30–7:00 AM from Srinagar. This puts you at the summit by 10:00–10:30 AM — early enough for the clearest morning light and before any afternoon cloud build-up. You get 3–4 hours at the top and return to Srinagar by 6:30–7:00 PM comfortably before dark.
🕐Latest safe departure: 10:00 AM from Srinagar. This gives you limited time at the summit (1–2 hours) and requires leaving the top by 3:00 PM latest to safely return before dark. Never drive the Daksum–Summit section in darkness without a local guide — no roadside lighting exists.
⛅Weather check: In July and August, afternoons often bring cloud and brief hail above 10,000 feet. Morning departures (before 7 AM) consistently give better summit clarity. By 2 PM in monsoon months, the summit may be in cloud. Morning is always better for photography and views.
Return Route Options
Most visitors return the same way — Sinthan Top back to Srinagar via Daksum, Kokernag, Anantnag. This is the safest and fastest option, taking the same 3–4 hours. However, there are alternatives for those wishing to build a circuit:
Return via Pahalgam (Recommended Circuit)
From Sinthan Top, descend to Daksum and Kokernag, then instead of turning north to Anantnag and Srinagar, continue east on the road toward Pahalgam. From Kokernag to Pahalgam is approximately 35 km. This creates a beautiful circuit — Srinagar → Sinthan Top → Pahalgam — covering two of the finest Anantnag district destinations in a single day trip or overnight. Pahalgam to Srinagar is a further 95 km (2.5 hours).
Continue to Kishtwar (Advanced — Multi-Day)
The brave and adventurous option: cross Sinthan Top and descend the Kishtwar side for a genuine trans-Himalayan journey. The road is significantly more challenging on the Kishtwar face — narrow, steep, and exposed. This requires a skilled local driver, a minimum of 2 days, and should only be attempted with professional guidance. Contact us for organized Sinthan Top–Kishtwar circuit packages.
